Cedars Children Contribute to UU book on Caring for Mother Earth

In honor of Earth Day, Cedars children ages 4 to 10 participated in a special Chapel worship service that focused on being in balance (or out of balance) in nature (ask your child about parachuting cats!), our UU 7th principle and caring for our Earth “because it is our home.”  Two UU women religious educators from Maine are gathering kids’ comments from UU churches across the nation for a special book using the words of our wise young people.  They sent us a postcard with two questions.  Here are the answers from our children.  I am proud of them for knowing so much at such a young age, for using creative thinking and for expressing their love for our planet in their special answers.  It was a wonderful, interactive day in RE!

Why do we need to take care of Mother Earth?

bullet

Why we want to take care of Mother Earth is if we lose trees we will lose oxygen for us to inhale.

bullet

Because if we don’t it will cause global warming in the Arctic.

bullet

Because it is our home. (x3)

bullet

Because it is the only reachable planet with the ability to support life.

bullet

We need to take care of the Earth because it is our home and every living things.

bullet

Because it is our primary life source and because it is our home.

bullet

We live on earth it is our home and we should take care of it and if we don’t we and all the animals will die.

bullet

Because it is the only planet with air and safety and life.

bullet

We need to because we live on Earth and it would be like killing our selfs.(sic)

bullet

I love Mother Earth

If you could have one wish for Mother Earth, what would it be?

bullet

For there to be no litter and make animals safe and so we don’t half (sic) to smell the awful smell.

bullet

We would always take care of the earth.

bullet

Recycling.

bullet

To fix the ozone layer to stop global warming

bullet

I wish mankind would make less pollution and try to save endangered animals.

bullet

A long happy life and a clean environment

bullet

That people would not litter enywear.(sic)

bullet

That we could have longer days in the winter.

bullet

I would wish that all the cars in the world would become electric and air pollution would go down.

bullet

No litter in the world.

bullet

I love this world!  (Many pictures of hearts were drawn across the postcard in a line)

Summer RE Program will be All gREen! Join Up for Fun!

Stay tuned for news of the Summer RE program, which begins June 15.  A truly intriguing and wonderful potpourri of environmental learning activities, music, games and crafts, all centered on helping to take care of the earth is being developed by the RE Committee.  Many of you have signed up to be involved as volunteers, so thank you in advance.  More volunteers are needed.  See Terry Siebert in the lobby after church to sign up, or email her at siebert@bainbridge.net.  We have a LOT of fun in the summer, so if you’d like to spend a Sunday morning with a great group of kids, step right up!

        Lisa Ashley, DRE

If you would like to be part of the program as a teacher, as a classroom helper, or by joining the RE Committee, please contact Lisa Ashley.

RE Table Welcomes All

Check out the RE table in the lobby.  We offer an informational flyer for new families, registration forms, and pamphlets from the UUA.  We will post photos from classes and events on the wonderful new bulletin board designed by Lara Turney.  An RE Greeter will be there every week to help newcomers find their way to church and classes.  Contact Lisa Ashley or Terry Siebert if you’d like to help with the Greeter Table one Sunday a month.

RE Scholarship Fund Available
Some RE programs cost more than our pledges are able to cover.  In those cases, we ask families to pay extra for an activity, such as the Coming of Age program (The Quest).  In order to ensure that our programs do not become a hardship for families, we have limited scholarship funds available.  Money will be awarded at a 50% subsidy of the total cost of the event.  If you want to request a scholarship, contact Lisa Ashley.

Questions?  Contact: Lisa Ashley or call the Church Office at 206-780-0373.

Between Sundays
is designed to help parents and other adults answer religious questions raised by children and youth.
uu&me!
is a magazine that helps kids think about what really matters.

Between Sundays and uu&me! are projects of the
UUA's Church of the Larger Fellowship.
