Sunday Services

Sunday, June 28, 10:00 am: Second Sight or Double Vision?
A Report from My Inner Muslim-Christian Dialogue
Rev. Ann Holmes Redding, guest minister
Bill Scarvie, worship associate
Our guest preacher is a Christian minister, writer, singer, and teacher who has served in parishes and seminaries for over 25 years. (Her very first sermon was in a UU setting.)  She also practices Islam and has recently founded Abrahamic Reunion West, a non-profit committed to the task of healing the global dysfunction of the Abrahamic family of faith.  Rev. Dr. Redding says of this sermon, “People have accused me of two-timing Jesus or being a double agent.  In my experience I have never felt closer to Jesus; and practicing Islam gives me a shot at being a better human being and, therefore, a better Christian.”

Sunday, July 5, 10:00 am: The Spiritual Side of Democracy
Porter Hall, guest speaker
Julie Tamanini, worship associate
We might think of democracy only as an approach to governance, but it has deep roots in UU shared beliefs: from protection of minorities, to separation of powers, to the equality of all humankind. We'll look at where democracy has taken us over the last few centuries and to the future it points us toward.

Sunday, July 12, 10:00 am: Kismet, Karma, or Coincidence?
Beth Balas, guest speaker
Donna Larkin Mohr, worship associate
What is Luck? Where is our “Locus of Control”? Do people get what they deserve and deserve what they get? As Stephen Hawking says, “I have noticed that even people who claim that everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road.” To what extent does our belief system support taking responsibility for our choices while still realizing, with humility, the limits of control over our circumstances? We will explore how faith in ourselves and what the future holds collide.

Sunday, July 19, 10:00 am: The Service in Song
Christine Smellow, Music Director
Donna Larkin Mohr, worship associate

This special summer service features our choir singing the Call to Worship, Prayer, Offertory, and Benediction. On July 5 and 12, the congregation will have the opportunity to recommend hymns for the Gathering Music. We'll have time during today’s service when members, friends, and guests may request hymns. Raise your voice in song and feel your spirit lifting you up as we come together to make a joyful noise.

Sunday, July 26, 10:00 am: Remember the Sabbath
Rev. Barbara ten Hove, co-minister
The summer is a time when many of us take as much time to play as to work. In these strange economic times, can we remember to balance our lives by honoring the concept of the Sabbath?

Activities and Announcements

“Joining Sunday” is the FIRST Sunday of each month, when Cedars' Membership Book will be available for signing (one of the requirements for membership).  Meet a church leader up front at the altar table right after service for a jolt of joining joy.

Coffee and Tea Sales Fund-raiser: We are selling regular coffee in three different blends and a decaf medium-dark roast of Grounds for Change coffee, an organic, fair trade, shade grown coffee that supports a women’s coffee collective in Latin America.  Teas are also be available.  Coffee and tea can be ordered at church on the second Sunday of the month.  Orders will be delivered on the third Sunday of the month.  For more information, contact Tracy Dickerson.

Office Hours for the Month of July:
Co-Ministers Jaco B. & Barbara W. ten Hove
(206-780-0373, ext. 1) E-mail: minister@cedarsuuchurch.org.

It’s especially wise to arrange ahead for an appointment during the summer, when our co-ministers are not on a regular schedule and tend to travel a lot, including two trips in July. During such times, the Board President Channie Peters, Vice-president Richard Wilson, Pastoral Care Team Chair Diana Peters, and the church office will know how to reach them in an emergency.

The Beacon is Now Fully Electronic: The July 2009 issue of The Beacon marks a new era in electronic publication for Cedars. Printed copies will be available in church on the Welcome Table for visitors.  If you do not have internet access, please contact the editor, Frank Mandt.  If you are currently a mail subscriber, you will receive a printed copy until your subscription expires, after which, we will ask you to view The Beacon online.  It can easily be printed for more convenient reading.  Please contact the editor, Frank Mandt, if you have any questions.

Fall Women’s Retreat Planning Event,
Wednesday, August 5, 7:00 pm (please note new date!): In preparation for a one-day Women’s Retreat scheduled this fall for Saturday, October 17, all interested Cedars women (friends or members) are invited to attend a festive planning event at the home of Andrea Tryon on Thursday, August 6 at 7:00 pm.  We will enjoy each other’s company and some refreshment while we talk together with Rev. Barbara ten Hove about what we want to happen at this first Cedars Women’s Retreat.  Please let Andrea know if you will attend and get driving instructions by emailing her at atryon@comcast.net.

Super Suppers:  Do you want to help our Social Action team but don’t have much time?  Are you a good cook looking for an excuse to make brownies?  The Super Suppers at Helpline House needs your help!  We are teaming up with Congregation Kol Shalom to put on a dinner for all comers at Helpline House at 4:45 pm on the last Tuesday of every month.  We are responsible for salad, dessert, and bread.  If you can bring one of those items, help host the dinner with a member of the Social Action Committee, or simply want more information about these dinners, please contact our coordinator, Carol Ann Davidson.

The Island School Rentals: Robin Hanway is the contact person for reserving spaces at The Island School outside of our regular services. Please download the Reservation Form and send it to Robin. For questions or more information, please contact Robin Hanway.

Cedars Blog is Active: If you haven’t been to the Cedars Blog lately, you’ve been missing some good posts.  Check it out at www.cedarsuuchurch.org/blog.htm. If you’re a member who would like to post on the blog and are not registered, e-mail Frank Mandt for an invitation.  Anyone can post a comment.

Parking at The Island School:  There are only about 25 parking places at the school itself, but plenty of parking is available across the street at Sage Manufacturing. You can always drive through to drop off (or pick up) at the school building, but we ask that good walkers please park in the Sage lot so we can save the school spaces for those who need close-in parking.

The Beacon Deadline is the 15th of the month.  Your cooperation is appreciated.

Please see the Calendar for additional activities and updates.
