Great Moments on the Inexorable March Toward “BothAndia” — Eastern European Roots

by Rev. Jaco ten Hove, co-minister
Cedars Unitarian Universalist Church

February 19, 2012

Just so there’s no confusion, if you were to search the internet for references to the term “BothAndia,” you would find mention of it almost entirely in works associated with me, so I have to be accountable for whatever fallout there is from this invented expression. It has become one of my favorite words, along with “inexorable” (which means steady, unstoppable)—and today I get to use them both in the same sermon title!

I find BothAndia to be a very handy and expressive tool, especially as an adjective — “bothandian.” But more than that, it helps me highlight an important, maybe even essential liberal religious value: inclusion. And I will draw your attention momentarily to some early Eastern European roots of the Unitarian side of our religion, by profiling two pivotal moments that are decidedly “bothandian.”

I believe the arc of the universe is leading us—slowly, perhaps, but inexorably — toward BothAndia, an idealized state of being, where “both/and” solutions to apparently oppositional dilemmas are eagerly sought, found and utilized to strengthen the common
good. This inclusive vision is in contrast to reliance on more closed and often absolutist “either/or” responses to life’s challenges.

My hope is that after I do this here, any of you will be at least a little bit better able to explain what we stand for and why our heritage matters, both then and now. To be able to adequately speak up for our religious perspective in the current national climate is a challenge I hope none of you will shy away from, since we are the latest generation of both caretakers and innovators of a “freedom that (both) reveres the past (and) trusts the dawning future (even) more” (from Hymn #145, “As Tranquil Streams”).

Resilience as a Spiritual Strength

by Rev. Jaco B. ten Hove, co-minister
Cedars Unitarian Universalist Church
Bainbridge Island and N. Kitsap County, WA
February 5, 2012

In any community and on any individual path there will be struggles, adversity, trials of one sort or another. Such is life. The strengths we muster to face any challenge come from deep within us. When pushed, our individual hearts and the heart of a community often draw from the resources that we have collected, the inspirations that guide us, during times easy and hard.

Resilience would seem to be a valuable quality—spiritual or otherwise—to bring to the fore, certainly when challenge knocks us for a loop, but also as a healthy, proactive part of one’s life. I agree with Gigi Leach, that stasis or merely recovering from adversity is not progress. I’m convinced that using a lens of resilience can help us strengthen both our individual and collective paths forward, especially if, as seems likely, the 21st century will continue to throw the weight of the world at us in ways that we don’t expect—or at least don’t want to expect.

Volunteer Spotlight: Alan Miller

Cedars would like to recognize Fletcher Bay’s Alan Miller for his outstanding service and dedication. He’s a resonant bass in the choir, helps lead our Music and Adult Programs, and tirelessly assembles (and packs away) the myriad chairs that serve as our pews—every Sunday. Here’s to Alan!

Special Collection for February – It Gets Better Project

305.365byRBBairdThe SAC special collection for February will go to It Gets Better, a project created to show young LGBT young people the levels of happiness and potential their lives will contain if they can just get through their teen years.

The project began in 2010 when Dan Savage and his partner created a YouTube video to inspire hope for young people facing harassment and bullying at school. They wanted to create a personal way for adult LGBT supporters everywhere to share their stories. Since then the It Gets Better Project has turned into a world wide movement, inspiring more than 30,000 user-created videos viewed more than 40 million times. Beneficiaries of the It Gets Better project include the Trevor Project, determined to end suicides among LGBT youth, and GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network), a national organization working to ensure safe schools for ALL students regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Help us support this important work. Make checks out to It Gets Better.

Cedars Religious Education Wish List

Hearts-Quilting2009RE will be needing the following items over the coming months.  Would you be willing collect (and possiblty store these items until the time comes) over the coming months?

For this weekend and the 26th – We need machine springs, plastic binding springs, toilet paper and paper towel tubes and any other weird items that kids might use to make an “invention”. This is for the K-2nd “Invention Center” that we are setting up each Sunday this month.

For March 11 -  We need a herd of Beanie Babies…mostly wild animals, not just bears. We are looking to borrow or keep up to 12 of these guys for games, stories and projects. Prefer specific animals over themed-out bears.

Looking for a good condition “Marble Works” game. The kind where you build tracks and send marbles down the tracks.

For April 1 – We need to borrow (or keep) a plastic or stuffed bull (with nose ring) for our Ferdinand story.

Also looking for a volunteer sewing-type to get fabric for and hem/possibly install grommets for two cloth marching banners.

For May 6 – Packaging materials and recyclable items – Plastic bubble packaging, cardboard spacers, Styrofoam corner protectors, stuff that come in boxes of products you buy.  Examples of stuff we throw away that can be used in other ways…old cds, etc…This really does need to be stored and collected for us and I would appreciate donors who could haul it away again when we are done with the lesson.

Thanks for your help. To offer certain items, please contact Candee Cole at cedarsdre@gmail.com.

Consider Yourself Part Of Cedars Pastoral Care Network

Take my handNeighborhood Team liaisons to the Cedars Pastoral Care Team (PCT) members keep their eyes and ears open for those “in need.” But we’re not the ones who always provide the help. Our job is to connect “care needers” with potential “care givers.”
Cedars has grown rapidly from an intimate family of 30 to a congregation of over 150. To help meet the needs of our extended family, a Pastoral Care system network has been developed. In the “old days” word spread quickly. Today it’s different. And, frankly, it’s the PCT that needs your help now.

For most people, it’s not easy to ask for help. You can assist by letting ministers Barbara and Jaco (or one of the team members listed below) know if you think someone needs our help. And/or you can offer to be helpful, as many of you do.

We can arrange to bring meals, get rides to the doctor, refer you to other services available in our area, and even do more personal things, like writing thank you notes.

Being a gracious receiver is equally as important as being a gracious helper. And being a “connector” is one of the most important roles of all. All three are needed to make our Pastoral Care Team system network as helpful as possible.
