Community Service Day

Helping Hands Deeply Appreciated

Our Community Service Day event at Helpline House on Bainbridge Island was huge success.  Thank you to the 44 members, friends and families that scrubbed the building, sorted food, cleaned the food bank, pruned trees, recycled metal, and performed many other tasks.  Lots of hands made light work.  Here are just a few of the many responses we received from Helpline Administration and Staff:

·         In this work last Saturday, the church volunteers were a living example of one of the church principles that affirms and promotes the inherent worth and dignity of every person.  On behalf of our clients who were so honored by their efforts and all of us who work here and wish to deliver our services in the best possible, healthful way, we thank them.  Truly Neighbor Helping Neighbor in action!

·         Thank you, thank you to all the volunteers from Cedars!  What a delight to come in and find all the sparkling shelves in the food bank.  The area was nice and sunny on a rainy day and made everyone smile!   On behalf of the business office at Helpline House, I want to express our thanks and admiration for the fabulous cleaning job done in our archives room in the barn.  Everything out there looks so spotless that it makes it so much easier to contemplate working in the room.  Thanks again to the intrepid Cedars workers for a job well done!

·         This is just to say it was exciting to walk into Helpline yesterday and see the place glow!  The glass refrigerator doors were clear and shiny; the walls were ultra clean; the windows - ah - you could see out; the mountains of Postal Food Drive food were considerably reduced.  It is truly heartwarming to see a congregation such as Cedars spend their day off on a Saturday to give to the community.  All of us are blessed in having them exemplify the Neighbors Helping Neighbors!

·         We truly feel we are part of a whole when the community not only gives financially but also gives of their time to keep our place in good working order.  Kudos to Cedars Unitarians for their excellent help last week-end.

UUSC Update

The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) held a number of interesting workshops at the recent General Assembly in Minneapolis Minnesota, including:

bullet

·         Women Organizing for Workers’ Rights

bullet

·         Unitarians Who Defied the Nazis

bullet

·         International Humanitarian Crises: A UU Response to Haiti

bullet

·         Human Rights in Israel/Palestine: UU Perspectives

Why not consider going next year?

UUSC seeks applicants for a permanent President and CEO with the goal of filling the position by January 1.  Bill Schulz is the interim President; he brings distinguished experience with human-rights and management work, as well as a history of involvement with the UUA and UU congregations.

Might you know of a good candidate?

UUSC is in the midst of a five-year strategic-planning process.  The board will vote on the plan in early August; it will be available to all soon after.  The planning has focused on, among other areas:

bullet

·         the connection to the UUA, how UUSC can offer opportunities for UUs to engage with their work

bullet

·         how to be more relevant to youth

bullet

·         how they can offer more sophisticated on-line tools for those who wish to use them.

Consider how these areas impact you.

The Guest at Your Table program was a huge success!  Significantly more funds were raised than had been projected.  This accomplishment will allow UUSC to move forward in their human-rights work with less concern about financial challenges.

Thanks to us all!

The UUSC is a membership-based organization, separate from and independent of the UUA and receives no funding from the UUA.  Please consider taking the time to join or renew your membership and help carry this important work forward all year long.  Every gift of $100 or more is matched by the UU Congregation at Shelter Rock in Manhasset, NY.  You can renew online at   www.uusc.org

Super Suppers Continue to Grow

We are seeing a steady increase in the numbers of people coming to our Super Supper at the end of each month.  We now serve between 25 and 30 persons per meal.  It is our wish that all will be fed, and no one will be turned away hungry.  We are seeking to increase the number of volunteers that will bring food each month.  The Cedars Choir signed up six people to bring food and to help with set up and clean up in March.  Is your committee ready to step up and help?  Please contact the Super Suppers coordinator.

Our Mission:

“The Social Action Committee believes that a commitment to social justice is a natural extension of both our fellowship's mission statement and the Unitarian Universalist principles.  We further believe that integrated and coordinated social action is integral to the life and growth of our fellowship.  Our mission, therefore, is to identify and facilitate involvement in social action projects to which we can make a positive and substantive contribution.”

Our Committee includes:
Helen Nissani, chair
Julie Ann Dakin
Carol Ann Davidson
Karolynn Flynn
Gerlind Jenkner
Carolyn Kempkes
Diane McCann
Mary Ann Rossing
Kassia Sing
Veronica Todd

We meet on the fourth Tuesday of every month at 7:00 pm.  We welcome your ideas, participation, and consideration. If you’re interested in learning more about our work or joining our committee, please e-mail Helen Nissani.
