Why You Should Write a Sermon

I'm pretty new to the worship committee.  In fact, I'm pretty new to Unitarian Universalism.  That's why I'm humbled by, and grateful for, the chance to add my voice to our Sunday morning services.

I was surprised, though, when we were challenged this spring by Julie Forest, our Interim Minister, to prepare sermons based on UU sources and deliver them this summer.  I would have never thought I could do that.  In college, I put off the freshman Speech class until my last semester precisely because I was afraid of speaking in public.

And yet, I've found that speaking in front of the Cedars congregation is oddly peaceful. I was as comfortable delivering my sermon as I would have been chatting individually with any one of you.  I feel calmed by the love and support that is generated by all of us being together.  During our worship committee meeting recap, other members said the same thing: it feels good to give a sermon.

So there's one reason: it feels good.  Another reason is that sharing your point of view on Sunday morning helps us all get to know each other better and deepens our commitment to one another.
