An Invitation
Cedars’ Spirituality Book Group is relaunching itself as the Marvin Evans Reading Group, honoring and remembering our late friend’s insightful pursuit of Salvation by Bibliography. We are re-assembling after taking a year off for recovery from a decade-long quest for personal growth through reading, reflecting, and discussing about fifty mutually-selected titles.
We enthusiastically recommend our first title, Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari. This relatively recent and well-regarded work is a fascinating and provocative study of how we have developed over the last 70,000 years to become our present selves. It is conveniently divided into four sections that will allow us to spread our reading and discussion into four sessions. Each session will cover approximately 100 pages of thought-provoking text.
Our third and fourth UU principles express significant commitments we make to each other as well as to ourselves: Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations, and A free and responsible search for truth and meaning. These principles also provide encouragement and guidance for much of what we do with each other here at Cedars. They very specifically apply to our book groups.. Please join us as we continue our fourth principle practice in discussing Part I of Sapiens by Yuval Harari.
