Soulcraft in the Workplace: Lessons from My Father

As another Labor Day approaches, America’s workers are anxious about their future. Government firings, robots and A.I. replacing humans, paychecks not keeping up with the cost of food and rents, these leave workers feeling unappreciated as well as pessimistic. Let’s reflect on the virtues of work and the role it plays in the cultivation of the soul.

is Minister Emeritus of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock, Manhasset, New York, and is author of numerous books on Transcendentalism and Transcendentalist authors, most recently “The Gospel According to This Moment: The spiritual Message of Henry David Thoreau,” published by the University of Massachusetts Press. Since his retirement in 2011, he and his wife, Linda, have been living on Bainbridge Island.
